Our bikes, your gear

Docker Apollo

The Apollo is a perfect bike for beginners and inexperienced riders. Experienced riders will love them too once they have gone through the re-calibration process 😁. Safe and reliable for both on- and off-road riding. With their big fuel tanks, we can follow endless off-the-beaten tracks without having to worry.

Desert Rats has a fleet of 12 identical Docker Apollos that are maintained by our own mechanic to the highest standard.

YOU DO NOT NEED A DRIVER’S LICENCE FOR OUR DOCKER APOLLO BUT SOME RIDING EXPERIENCE IS RECOMMENDED.

Wikiloc and Quad Lock

Wikiloc is a smartphone app we use for navigation during your tour. Desert Rats will provide you with a smartphone ready to go. This way you don’t have to worry about getting behind, you can go at your own pace, and take photos whenever you want!

Every bike has a Quad Lock mount with a dampener to secure your phone for easy navigation. Don’t worry, the phone won’t fall off. A USB charger is attached to the handlebars to keep the phone charged.

John’s opinion

“For the past 25+ years, I’ve been on the ground with Moto Aventures. That’s 500+ tours. Always on cutting edge, modern machinery like our latest model KTM 450 EXCs and our BMW 1250 GS series of bikes.

My observations…

As an experienced rider, the Dockers take some getting used to. My biggest challenge was getting used to the power…or lack of it and the gearbox is backwards (4 down instead of 1 down and 5 up). I kept kicking up a gear instead of going down, with the resulting scream of protest from the engine. All during the first day, I found myself thrashing the engine trying to get that little extra speed. It was frustrating.

Day 2 and I’d recalibrated. I’d got the hang of the backwards gearbox and instead of thrashing the engine, I got into cruise mode. What a difference, after a punishing first day I started to enjoy the ride and over the next 4 days the Docker and I became best friends.

The Docker Apollo is an amazingly tough and resilient little bike. It’s no wonder the 3rd world is inundated with them. They do the job, they get you there and for sure it’s better than walking.

All 3 of us enjoyed the slower pace. Stopping to cool down in the rivers on hot days, taking in the local culture, and drinking mint tea with the locals. Hanging out at the souks. It was a chilled-out biking tour.

We enjoyed it so much that we have decided to offer Docker tours between the months of September and June. We have 12 Docker Apollos.”
